Question by Rhonda: What is a “voided check” (Direct Deposit form for my work)?
Can someone please explain what this is?
I want to direct deposit money from my pay check at work into my savings account. My work wants me to attach a “voided check” a.k.a a “voided personal check”. I have no idea what this is.
What if I don’t own any checks, nor want to. I don’t have any checks of my own.

Take a personal check and write “VOID” in really big letters on it in pen or permanent marker. I’m not kidding. That’s what they need. The check will have your account info, but it won’t be possible for someone else to intercept it and use it.

They want a check that you write VOID on. The reason for this is for Direct Deposit, they need you bank’s routing number as well as your account number. These are the numbers that are encoded on the bottom for your check, between symbols. Both are on you check along with other information (sometimes your check serial number) and it is less likely to be wrong if they take directly off your check rather than having you write it out or give it to them verbally.

By writing void on the check, it cannot be used or forged.

If you do not have checks, you can go to your bank and request a COUNTER CHECK and they can make one for you. If they won’t give you a counter check, ask for an “encoded deposit slip” for your savings account. Make sure it has the “Routing/Transit” number as well as your savings account number. If you explain you need it for saving for Direct Deposit, they should be able to create you one with your savings account number on it, as long as it is voided. Go to the bank service desk rather than a teller. They have the printers that can encode the needed numbers on the bottom of the check.

Take one of your checks and write VOID on it. It just gives your bank account info for direct deposit from your employer.

  • Larry B says:

for mi direct deposit itook a check and voided it,,
by wrighting in red “VOID” diagonally across front
all the employer needs the the account and routing numbers
typed across bottom of check those numbers basically are the banks number and you’re account number,,
hope this helps,,,, btw wen u inscribe the word “void”
this keeps anyone who may have access to the check
from forging you’re signature on it and trying to cash a check for say 1 million dollars,,

  • A void check is just one of your checks for the bank (the bank you would like your paycheck to be deposited to) with the word VOID written on it. You should write VOID big to prevent any other use of the check. For a savings account, you can maybe use a deposit slip from your bank.

  • avoid cheque is when you mark in big letters on the back of a empty cheque void to allow a busines to take so much from your account when payment is due.

  • The only purpose of the voided check is to supply the accurate routing and account number to send the money to. You can probably have the money deposited into savings, just need to supply the account number. Maybe attach a copy of the statement.

The thing is your preference is weird since most people use checking accounts, so they’re not used to it.

  • Ask the bank teller for a payroll check, you can get one even if you have a savings account. You have to use your pen to write in large letters “VOID” before you give it to your employer

  • Take a deposit or withdrawl slip from your savings book and write VOID on both sides of it. Take that to your employer and they can do the direct deposit into you savings account. If you do not have deposit or withdrawl slips, have someone at the bank make you one and do the same thing with it.
